SSC Exam Guide: A list of One Word Substitutions


An important bit of every SSC examination is the grammar section. To help you ace this section we have combined and created a list of popular one-word substitutions, centers for SSC Exam Coaching in Delhi recommend knowing by heart-

Audience: a number of people listening to a host or lecture organized

Atheist: a person who does not believe in the entity of god

Anthropologist: the person who studies the evolution of mankind

Autocracy: a government that consists of a single person

Autobiography: a story or history of a person’s life that is written by themselves

Amputate:  cutting off a part of the body that may be infected

Archives:  a record of public, historic or government documents

Aquatic: animal and plant lives that survive in the water

Ambidexterity: the skill a person possesses that enables him to use either of his hands with ease

Arbitrator: an impartial party who is appointed to solve a dispute between two parties

Astrologer: a person who studies the effect of heavenly bodies such as stars on the life of a man

Bouquet: an arrangement of floral creations and flowers

Blasphemy: the action of speaking disrespectfully about sacred topics

Crèche: a nursery set up where children of working parents are cared after for a time

Cosmopolitan: a person who looks at the whole world as his own singular country

Chauffeur: a person hired to take care of and drive a motor car

Curator: the person in charge of the collections displayed in a museum or art gallery

Carnivorous: a person who requires meat to survive

Cannibal: a person who consumes human flesh

Connoisseur: an enthusiast or critical judge of a particular art of craft

Crusade: a war based on religion

Choreographer: a person who teaches the art of dance as well as creates unique pieces

Calligraphist: a skilled artisan who can write with beautiful handwriting

Dormitory: a place of rest with numerous beds

Emigrant: a person who lives in a country other than his own

Edible: an item that is suitable to be eaten

Fatal: that which results in a death

Fragile: that which can be easily broken

Feminist: a person who believes and works for the welfare of women

Granary: a place where grains are stored

Genocide: the mass murder of an entire race

Hive: a place where bees reside

Horizon: the place or line at which it seems as if the earth and sky meet

Honorary: holding an office or position without remuneration as compensation

Inaudible: a sound that cannot be heard

Illegible: writing that cannot be comprehended

Incognito: a trail that cannot be recognized by others due to a disguise

Kennel: a space for dogs and puppies

Mint: the location that prints and makes coins and notes

Orphanage: a place for children without parents to live

Polygamy: the act of marrying and being in a relationship with more than one woman at a time

Suicide: the act of killing oneself

Teetotaler: a person that does not consume any form of intoxication through drinks

Wardrobe: a storage space for clothing articles
